Plotting stories is hard work. I can come up with the general idea, but the specifics and details that add depth and meaning to a story are hard. Certain scenes set the stage for the emotions of a later scene, characters met earlier must be fleshed out a bit to understand why you mentioned them in the first place. You know. Details. My problem isn't so much coming up with the details, but deciding just how much is needed. Balance.
Balance is my current dilemma. Personally and professionally. My professional life tends to eat way more hours than I signed up for, leaving me little time for the passion that is my now and will be my future. I know they say that if you can't devote some to the craft everyday, then you aren't a writer. What about those people that turned out great novels in their spare time? Not their dedicated, do-or-die, set aside time each day to write. Are they considered less of a writer because they don't force themselves to bleed every moment of the day dry? I don't think so. So, balance is what I'm seeking at the moment.
