Writers Strike...

I will admit it.  I like certain awards shows.  Not all mind you.  For example, I could care less about the MTV Music and Video Awards or the Nickelodeon Kid Awards.  But, I do like the Peoples Choice, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and Academy Awards programs.  I like to see my favorites win.

However, this year not so much.  The Peoples Choice Awards is usually one big partay.  Not this year.  Just the host and video acceptance speeches with highlights from previous shows.  They canceled the Golden Globes and are replacing it with a press conference to announce the winners.  Who cares?  If I can't see the glitz and glamour let me read about it in the paper in the morning.  I really don't want to watch an hour long news conference.  The Academy Awards may be next on the chopping block.

I understand the issues the Writers Guild of America have and why they are on strike.  Production companies and producers make millions off of Internet runs of movies, TV shows, etc., but the writers don't make anything.  When TV shows are put on DVD, they don't get anything.  Maybe they will after this, but then again... It now costs $9.50 for me to go to the movie.  $7 for the matinee.  Will it cost me $10.50 soon so that production companies can replace lost revenues - from which the writers may see negligible revenue?  Too much for me to figure out, but I feel like I'm being screwed by the motion picture/television industry in the same way the oil companies are screwing me with gas prices and still making record profits!  Share a little, Mr. Movie Mogul, so that you can go back to making more obnoxious amounts of money sooner, rather than later.

The Screen Actors Guild members support them now, but I bet it won't be long before the hiatus from productions and lack of new prospects start to hit their pockets.  Well, they'll strike again, too.  Then precious shows the writers  wanted more money to write are canceled - for lack of interest in their plight by the American public.  I am tired of reruns already.  Settle with these people!

I hear this strike may carry on past June - just in time for the producers to go on strike because their union contract is up for negotiation.  I wonder if Hollywood could stand it if no new creative projects were to come out of there for more than a year...  Interesting prospect.  Maybe people would read more books!!!

Okay, I take it back. Stay on strike.  Then more people will go back to the original form of entertainment - READING.  People will buy books!   Ironic, since most Hollywood stuff is based on book manuscripts anyway.  Maybe actors could stay gainfully employed by reading audio books.  Hmmm.

  1. I watched the People's Choice thingy and it was *yawn* all right - at least you got to see the actors/actresses. But the Golden Globes - I tried to watch but was absolutely bored.

This strike is hurting a lot of people, the gaffes, best boys, make up artists, hair stylists, etc, who don't make a lot of money. I know that the writer's deserve more and that they should get everything that they're striking about, but I can't help but feel sorry for the people who are now out of work - people with families and mortgages. I hope it ends soon.

  2. I read today that the Directors union has almost reached a deal with the studios. They hope that will prompt the writers and studios to get back to the negotiation table.
